Your iṣṭa devatā by Jaimini’s kārakāṁśa method. The calculator finds your ātmakāraka, its navāṁśa sign, the 12th from it and the graha that decides that house, and gives the deity for that graha, with all your chara kārakas. It can read the kārakāṁśa in the vimśāṁśa, D20, instead.

Śrī Rāmakṛṣṇa’s D9 says Śiva and his D20 says the Mother: the same steps this calculator runs, worked by hand, with three questions from the class. 13 minutes, on YouTube.

How it works

The ātmakāraka is the graha with the most degrees in its sign, whichever sign that is. Rāhu moves backwards, so his degrees are counted from the end of the sign, 30° less his longitude in it, as the Sudhā commentary on Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 32.13 says. With Rāhu there are eight chara kārakas, which is what Jagannātha Horā uses unless you change it. You can leave Rāhu out and use seven.

The sign the ātmakāraka occupies in the navāṁśa is the kārakāṁśa. The 12th from it is the house of the soul’s liberation, and the iṣṭa devatā is read from the graha that has the most to do with it. A graha in the sign comes first. If there are several, the one exalted or in its own sign there wins, and failing that the one with the most degrees in its rāśi sign, Rāhu’s and Ketu’s counted from the end. If the sign is empty, the grahas that aspect it by rāśi dṛṣṭi decide in the same way, and if none aspect it, its lord does. Scorpio and Aquarius have two lords, Mars and Ketu, and Saturn and Rāhu, and Jaimini’s rules for co-lords pick the stronger.

The kārakāṁśa is read in the navāṁśa unless you choose Vimśāṁśa, D20. Parāśara assigns the vimśāṁśa to upāsanā, Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 7.4, so some read the iṣṭa devatā there: the ātmakāraka’s D20 sign is the kārakāṁśa, and the 12th from it is decided by the same rules. In that reading, when Rāhu is the ātmakāraka the houses are counted backwards from him, since the nodes move backwards, and the 12th is the sign after his.

The deity for each graha is Jaimini’s own list, Upadeśa Sūtra 1.2.72–79 in B. Suryanarain Rao’s edition: Śiva for the Sun, Gaurī for the Moon, Lakṣmī for Venus, Skanda for Mars, Viṣṇu for Mercury and Saturn, Sāmba Śiva for Jupiter, Durgā for Rāhu, and Gaṇeśa and Skanda for Ketu. The table also gives each graha’s avatāra from Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra 2.5–7 and its Mahāvidyā in the usual Śākta pairing, as in the table in the career remedy.
