Tools, Pañcāṅga

By Tirth Doshi, Vedic astrologer in Ahmedabad. Parāśarī and Jaimini, True Citrapakṣa ayanāṁśa.

Your janma pañcāṅga: the vāra, tithi, nakṣatra, yoga and karaṇa at the moment of birth with their start and end times, the horā, muhūrta and choghadiya you were born in, the special yogas and vāsas, the day’s Rāhu kāla and other periods, and the lunar calendar down to the kāraka tithi and your thousandth full moon.

How it works

The pañcāṅga is the five limbs of time: the vāra or weekday, the tithi or lunar day, the nakṣatra of the Moon, the yoga made by adding the Sun and the Moon, and the karaṇa, half a tithi. Your janma pañcāṅga is these five at the moment you were born, with when each began and ends and the share of it left at birth.

The Vedic day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so a birth before sunrise belongs to the previous vāra. Sunrise here is the moment the centre of the Sun is on the true horizon, without refraction, as seen from the earth’s centre. Iṣṭa kāla is the time from sunrise to birth in ghaṭīs of 24 minutes. The lunar month is named from the sign the Sun was in at the new moon that began it.

The kāraka tithi is the tithi of your amātyakāraka counted from your ātmakāraka, both from the ātmakāraka calculator’s rules. The special yogas include the Tamil pañcāṅga’s Siddha, Amṛta, Maraṇa and Prabalāriṣṭa for your weekday and nakṣatra. Sahasra candrodaya is your thousandth full moon, about 81 years after birth. Your janma nakṣatra’s tāras are in the navatārā chakra. The Sun and Moon are their true positions with the True Citrapakṣa ayanāṁśa. Nothing you enter here leaves your browser.
